According to
the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), no matter how you’re traveling back to Canada, you must show proof of your residency status to enter the country again. This applies to everyone who is a permanent resident in Canada, whether they are family members or children.
To show proof,
you either need your PR card or PRTD Canada Visa document. PRTD Canada is issued to outside of Canada permanent residents who does not have a valid PR card with them. The reasons can be many, but your PRTD Canada is the sole document that can help you get entry back into the country when you do not have a valid PR card.
You should only apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document if you:
- Have permanent resident status in Canada;
- Don’t have a valid PR card (Card has been expired or lost);
- Are outside Canada;
- Will travel to Canada by plane, boat, train or bus.
In addition, in order to be eligible for a PRTD, you must:
- Prove your identity;
- Confirm your permanent resident status;
- Meet the residency obligation of a permanent resident.
