Foreign nationals may require
a visitor visa (also called a temporary resident visa) if they want to visit Canada for a temporary period of time, unless they are visa-exempt. The requirement of obtaining visitor visa applies to all individuals (excepting visa- exempt foreign nationals) whether they are coming to Canada for a temporary visit as tourists, workers, students or simply transiting through Canada.
A temporary resident visa is
an official document that is usually attached to the visitor’s passport. It usually allows the holder to stay in Canada for a maximum of 6 months from the date of entry. However, border services officers at Canadian ports of entry may sometimes endorse a date on a visitor’s passport which is shorter than 6 months. The visitor must leave Canada before this date. Border Services officers may also issue a document to the visitor called a “visitor record”, which will show the date by when a he/she must leave Canada.
Before granting a temporary resident visa, an immigration officer will usually need to be satisfied that the applicant:
- Has a valid travel document, like a passport;
- Is in good health;
- Has no criminal or immigration-related convictions;
- Has ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—to his/her home country;
- Will leave Canada at the end of his/her visit;
- Has enough money for his/her stay, the amount of which will depend on factors, such as, length of stay, staying arrangements, etc.
An application for
temporary resident visa may be made online or on paper.If incomplete, an application for temporary resident visa will be returned without processing.
An application may also be asked to:
- Go to an interview with Canadian officials in the applicant’s country or residence;
- Send more information;
- Get a medical exam;
